Pre & Perinatal Nutrition
In partnership with Vitamin Angels — Kiritimati & Fanning Island
$23,000 delivers prenatal nutrition for 2,000 mothers and children — from a US warehouse to a mother's hands on a remote atoll — and trains local providers to run the program themselves.
The Need
Kiribati's recorded infant mortality rate is roughly 35–40 deaths per 1,000 live births — versus 5–6 in the United States — and local sources put the true figure at three to five times what is reported, because most deaths occur far from the view of any clinic. The causes are overwhelmingly preventable: complications of birth, infection, and malnutrition. Maternal nutrition is among the highest-leverage, lowest-cost interventions available.
The Program
Oceans of Gratitude has secured an in-kind grant from Vitamin Angels: prenatal and perinatal multivitamin supplementation for 2,000 mothers and children, to be distributed at clinics on Kiritimati and Fanning Island beginning winter 2026/27. The program funds and executes the full chain of custody:
Import preclearance with Kiribati's health and customs authorities — permits, NGO tax waivers, and clearance secured before shipment, eliminating customs delays and the risk of seized or wasted product.
Freight & proper clinic storage — conditions maintained in transit, then cool, dry, ventilated, locked storage at 15–30°C, product batched and rotated First-Expiry-First-Out.
In-depth provider training on storage, dosage, inventory record-keeping, and identifying expired or damaged product — so local providers run the program reliably between missions.
